Marcus Monson is a major celebirty makeup artist (he does Hilary Swank and Liv Tyler, to name a few). He’s also the lead makeup artist for Guerlain. I was lucky enough to meet with him at Bloomingdales a few weeks ago when he was in town for a special appearance. I was even luckier to be treated to a makeup lesson / application, and I’m sharing some of his great tips, like how to create the illusion that you’ve just had a brow lift.

TIP: Of everything I learned, I was blown away by how this simple makeup trick can suddenly make you look wide eyed, and awake. Here’s how to fake a brow lift: Apply a small amount of Guerlain Precious Light (Marcus used 01 on my skin) above the eye brow and pat that into the skin. Then apply a small amount right under the brow and pat that in. That’s it!

Guerlain is known for makeup that gives skin a sunkissed effect. Now that summer is coming, it’s the perfect time to brush up on bronzer.

TIP: If you have a lot of light freckles like I do, choose a light bronzer. Marcus pointed out that my freckles are on the cool side because I have redness in my skin, so he used the Guerlain Terracotta Bronzer in 00 because it has more red in it. He noted that if you have beige freckles, then you want a beige bronzer.

TIP: If you’re not sure how to apply bronzer, Marcus says to draw the number 3. Starting at your forehead, go along the temples into the cheekbones and then finish at your chin.

TIP: Guerlain is also known for their Meteorites powder, which you apply as a finishing touch to set your makeup and add luminosity. The trick to applying this powder is to "swirl, tap, twirl." You want to swirl your brush in the powder, tap out the excess, and then apply it in a G shape that goes around the eyes and nose.

TIP: To get the most out of your mascara, hold your brush horizontally. When you apply the next coat, hold the brush vertically.

TIP: To give the skin around your eyes a boost, try this eye treatment: Pack on a paraben- and fragrance-free eye cream, let it sit for 20 minutes and then rub in the leftovers. Marcus also recommends keeping your eye cream in the fridge, which helps with puffiness and is extremely soothing.

P.S. One of my favorite parts of my meeting was seeing Marcus sketch my look on paper. He does this for all of his clients (see mine in above photo) and includes notes so you can recreate your makeup look. While some may use the drawing as a cheat sheet, I think it’s a work of art and will be framing mine to display in my office.

Shop the products Marcus used to create my look and some of my favorites from Guerlain, like their amazing makeup remover.
