I love shimmer shadow. Especially for an evening out, I like to apply a subtle hint of sparkle over my regular matte shadow to create dimension and brighten the eye. This is a look that anyone at any age should try. That said, when choosing the formula, make sure you don’t see actual dots of glitter in the pot. The particles should be so tiny that when you dust the shadow on lids, it glistens. Stila’s new glitter shadows are the perfect example.

We sampled two shades: Black Diamond and Blue Sapphire. My intern Elizabeth and I are wearing Black Diamond on our left eyelids and Blue Sapphire on our right. Surprisingly, even though the colors look dark in their containers, they’re sheer on skin. I love both for creating a smokey eye. For a softer look, apply a few layers of either shade and finish with mascara. If you want a more dramatic eye, first apply a matte navy or black shadow and then layer with the shimmer.

Tip:  Glitter shadow can be messy to apply. Here are a few tips to control fallout. 1. Apply the shadow with your fingertip or a silicone brush, like this one by Lisa Watier. 2. Place a tissue or shadow shields under your eyes to catch the flyaway glitter specs.
