Talking life, beauty and fashion with Whitney Port

Today I interviewed Whitney Port. Our convo was easy, fun and cool – all the words I’d used to describe the 27-year-old reality star turned fashion designer and then some.

I’m not gonna lie. I was excited for our phone date. I’ve been following Whit on TV since she first appeared on “The Hills” working with LC as an intern at “Teen Vogue.” I watched her breakup with Jay on “The City” and struggle to create her first fashion collection. Sure, you can say the launching pad of her success had a lot to do with being in the right place at the right time. She admits that.

“I was working as an intern in the same offices as “Teen Vogue.” I heard about a job opening there and while applying I found out about this new TV show. They asked if I’d send in a casting tape, which I did, and on my first day the cameras were there.”

While driving to a photo shoot, Whitney, who talks and sounds just as she does on TV (not sure why I was happy/relieved about this) was open and friendly as I asked her about dating, fashion, beauty and other good stuff. Read More

Recreate Oscar’s Best Hair & Makeup

Gwyneth Paltrow’s makeup artist may not be on your speed dial, but you can still find out the secrets to recreate the star’s Oscar look.  I’ve chosen some of my favorite beauties of the night and am sharing the how-to directions straight from their celeb hairstylists and makeup artists.

Celebrity makeup artist Leslie Lopez described her client Gwyneth Paltrow's makeup as "elegantly bronzed." Here's how she did it: Face: NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer SPF 30 PA +++ gave skin a sun-kissed glow. She then patted Super Orgasm Illuminator onto the apples of the cheeks. P.S. the tinted moisturizer was also slathered on her neck, décolletage, and shoulders. EYES: The champagne side of NARS Alhambra Duo Eyeshadow applied on the eyelid for a pop of gold, followed by a Maybelline brown liquid eyeliner along the lashline. The look was finished with NARS Larger Than Life Volumizing Mascara. LIPS: NARS Odalisque Larger Than Life Lip Gloss ** NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer SPF 30 PA +++ was also applied to her

Hairstylist David Babaii created Sandra Bullock's "Pony Style." To style, he began with Miracle Oil by David Babaii which was applied to gently towel dried hair for added shine and thermal protection. Next, he divided the hair into 4 sections (top, sides and nape) to ensure proper drying, smoothing each section perfectly straight. David used the nozzle attachment to control airflow along with a medium paddle brush to create this sleek straight finish. To achieve the perfect pony, David lightly sprayed her hair with IT&LY HAIRFASHION'S Pure Definition Hairspray and started smoothing and lifting the hair into a high ponytail. This provides extra control and a frizz free shine. To secure, he used a coated band, wrapping a small section of the ponytail around the band several times and securing with a few bobby pins. Next, he added a combination of the Miracle Oil and Pure Definition Hairspray to the palms of his hands and slid down the ponytail for additional shine and sleekness. To finish, he added a small decorative pin to the side.

Celeb makeup artist Angela Levin used CHANEL products. Eye Shadow: Quadra Eyeshadow in Mystic Eyes and a bit of Soft Touch Eye Shadow in Tigerlily on lids. Eye Liner: Under the eyes, I used the darkest color, the neutral deep brown with gold flecks shade, from Quadra Eyeshadow in Mystic Eyes. Eye Brows: Sculpting Eyebrow Pencil in Blond Clair. Blush: Exclusive Creation Blush Horizon de CHANEL. Highlighter: Limited Edition Natural Finish Pressed Powder in Jasmin. Lipstick: For Michelle's bright, purpley-pink lips, I mixed Rouge Coco Lip Colour in Paradis, a pink coral with Rouge Coco Lip Colour in Destineé, a spring plum.

Wella Professionals celeb stylist Andy LeCompte was inspired by old hollywood glamour, channeling the 1950s Grace Kelly finger waves to complement Penelope's Armani Privé gown. Here’s how Andy suggests getting the look: 1. Start with dry hair and use a small amount of Wella Professionals Natural Volume Styling Mousse at the roots. 2. Set hair in steam hot rollers by rolling hair straight back from the head. This gives hair texture and curl. Use smaller rollers in the back to create a tighter curl, then pin hair underneath into a faux bob. 3. Lightly mist with Wella Professionals Dynamic Fix 45 Second Crafting Spray, then back comb and tease at the root. Brush out the finger waves into place and set with finishing spray.

Get Adele’s Louboutin Grammy Mani

We expected Adele to be this year’s Grammy darling, but who knew her nails would be the topic that blew up on twitter. The singer surprised us sporting dagger-shaped nails inspired by Louboutins. Here’s how to do it yourself, courtesy of Nailtini.

1. Trying to paint the underside of your natural nail might be difficult and too messy to work with, even for skilled professionals. Use artificial nails or tips instead. Trim or file your natural nail down so it can’t be seen over the tip of your finger. Size artificial nails to all 10 fingers and set aside.

2. Paint the underside of each nail/tip with two coats of a classic red lacquer and allow the polish to dry completely. Apply 1-2 drops of nail glue to artificial nail and press onto nail bed holding in place until it sets. Repeat for all nails. Quick tip: Be careful not to use too much – you don’t want it seeping out the sides.

3. Paint tops of nails with your choice color, and then embellish with rhinestones or a glitter topcoat like Nailtini Sparkler.

Trend to Try: Feather Hair Extensions

Adrienne MaloofBeyonceHair bling is so 2010. I first spotted this questionable trend on “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star Adrienne Maloof. Then, Oprah had a guest on her show and interrupted the serious interview to ask about the sparkly hair extensions in her guest’s hair. They caught Oprah’s eyes, and suddenly that guest’s smart decision to wear her own product called Hair Flairs on national TV took her business to the next level. Even A-listers like Beyonce have stepped out wearing hair tinsel. The idea of putting shiny adornments in your hair may sound girlie and fun, but unless there’s a fairy princess in your midst or it’s Halloween, sprinkling glitter throughout your strands doesn’t cut it for everyday affairs.

Steven TylerHowever, there’s a new twist on this trend that does. Feather extensions are as fresh as Steven Tyler’s comeback and free of cheese factor. Credit West coasters and hipster-filled music festivals like Coachella for putting these plumes into flight. Their popularity has soared this spring and now they’re migrating east. Salons are adding feather clip-ons from popular brands like Featherlocks (click here to find a salon near you), which can be washed, dried, cut, flat-ironed and curled, to their menus. They only take 10 minutes for the stylist to insert, cost about $25 for a set of three, last about eight weeks (most stylists will remove them free of charge), and come in just about every color of the rainbow. For a look that’s cool and fashion-forward but won’t get you called into the boss’s office, my recommendation is to start with earthy shades that blend with your mane and create a peek-a-boo effect every time you flip your hair or catch a gust of wind. Need inspiration? Mr. “American Idol” himself (shown above left), Jennifer Love Hewitt and Hilary Duff (pictured below) highlight three different ways to look good in feathers.

Jennifer Love Hewitt

Hilary Duff Now that “feathered” hair is back, I asked stylist Joy La Rosa, who works at New York-based Sam Brocato Salon, to offer her tips on what works best for different hair types.

If you have short hair: Try more feathers in different places on the head.

If you have long hair: Ask for larger clusters of feathers so they don’t get totally lost in your hair.

If you have curly hair: Pick a mix of varying lengths, textures and thicknesses such as stripes and solids to help accentuate curls.

If you have straight hair: Follow Hilary Duff’s lead. Tame, thin, subtle feathers look best.
