However, choosing the right one is necessary or else it can throw off the entire look. Whatever you do, don’t match your lipstick to your dress. That’s so “Knot’s Landing.” Instead, choose a hue with slightly pinker, orange-ier or bluer undertones than your dress. This strategy will keep your style modern and unpredictable. Here are two examples from the Golden Globes to follow:

To come up with her bold lip, Emma Watson and her makeup artist researched makeup references on Pinterest for ideas and inspiration. They ended up mixing lipsticks to create this perfect fresh, yet classic color.

Here’s how Chanel celebrity Makeup Artist Kate Lee created Emma’s lip look:
I mixed CHANEL Rouge Allure Luminous Intense Lip Colour in Exaltée and Coromandel and went straight from the lipstick to the lip with my brush, blending the color out and blotted. I use oil blotting sheets when I blot because it lifts up the oils and the waxes, but it leaves behind the pigment so when you go back and add another coat it makes the color that much more intense. Then I put a layer of translucent powder on top and repeated the process.

Even though Lupita Nyong’o’s dress was red, celeb makeup artist Nick Barose went with red on her lips, but applied it as a stain. “If you pick a similar lipstick color to the dress, but apply it as a stain, it doesn’t look too matchy-matchy,” he says.

He started with CHANEL Le Crayon Lèvres Precision Lip Colour in Rouge Profond and then applied CHANEL Rouge Allure Luminous Intense Lip Colour in Pirate. This blend created a color that was similar to her dress but a little deeper. “You don’t want the red to be an exact match; you want it to be in the same family,” he adds. As a finishing touch, he used a lip brush to put a little bit of the gold, CHANEL Illusion D’Ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow in Vision right in the center of the lips. This added a golden glaze so the color didn’t come off flat.
