My sisters love me for me, but there’s no denying they enjoy the fruits of my labor–free beauty products (one person can only test so many eyeliners herself). Over the years, I’ve enlisted my two siblings to try all sorts of new goodies and report back to me.While Maggie has realized the magic of clip-in human hair extensions (she even wore them on her wedding day), Melissa has become an eyeliner aficionado, applying tons of brands in search of one formula that can keep up with her busy life. With four children under the age of 11, she’s been in search of a liner that’s goes on easily and that won’t smudge when she’s working out, when she’s running errands on an eye-watering cold day or when she’s cheering on her daughter at a humid, indoor swim meet. Finally, Melissa found a winner in Revlon Colorstay Eyeliner ($6.49, drugstores nationwide). Ironically, I had nothing to do with it; this discovery was all on her own, and she’s been raving about it since.
“It’s the first eyeliner I’ve found that stays put no matter what,” she says. “It goes on really smooth like a crayon and comes off really easily with eye makeup remover. Plus, it’s so cheap!”
I’ve always been the one giving beauty advice to my sisters, but the roles couldn’t have reversed at a better time. I’m getting married in a couple of weeks, and we all know a wedding can be an emotional occasion. I’m going to follow Melissa’s lead on this one, and if the waterworks turn on, I might look like a sobbing fool but at least my liner will still look great, and I’ll have her to thank.
There’s no beating around the bush: a bikini wax is as dreaded as a doctor’s appointment. You’re put in uncompromising positions (doggy style, anyone?) and your hair is ripped from your most sensitive parts. For these reasons, many women go into grooming hibernation as soon as it comes time to stuff their bikinis in the back of their drawers. Those days are over. I’ve been to spas and salons across the country in search of a wax experience that didn’t make me sweat. I finally found one at the Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa in Chicago. My lovely esthetician Mirela used a beeswax formula that’s exclusive to Elizabeth Arden Spas. It’s a fast-setting hard wax that doesn’t require the use of fabric strips, and she believes it’s the secret to making the bikini wax practically painless. Mirela’s precision and swiftness helped, too. If all else fails, pop a pain reliever 30-minutes before the appointment. Now you have no excuse to let yourself go wild. Gross potatoes: [grohs puh-tey-tohs] adjectiveWhen disgusting seems too vanilla to describe the vileness of a situation, you’ll be happy to have gross potatoes in your vocabulary.Usage: Heid Montag’s lip synch, cat woman (right) and halitosis are all gross potatoes.Speaking of halitosis, did you know that everyone gets bad breath at least once a day and that 62% of Americans are concerned about bad breath? New technology has given us one less thing to worry about. The recently launched Scope Outlast mouthwash, Crest Extra White Plus Scope Outlast toothpaste and Oral-B Advantage Floss Picks Plus Scope Outlast flavor provide fresh breath longer. The addition of Scope will keep you in mint condition all night long should a kiss come your way when least expected. Finally, close talkers are off the hook, sort of. They’re still creepy but at least their breath won’t clear the room. A word to the food-obsessed: If you’re about to indulge in a delicious meal, refrain from using these products until after dessert. They leave you with a fresh-breath feeling that’s so intense, it can dominate your palette.I’m giving away 5 Scope Outlast product bundles! Each bundle contains the mouthwash in two flavors (mint and peppermint), toothpaste and floss picks. Comment on this post by Nov. 12, and you’ll be entered to win.
Do you fantasize about what a rapper smells like? Just imagine inhaling the essence of beefy muscles, low-slung jeans, Timberlands and a diamond grill. Sound hot? I didn’t think so. When I heard that rappers 50 Cent and Nelly were both coming out with fragrances, I have to admit, I was expecting ew de toilettes. I’m happy to report that I got served.Power by Fifty Cent is gritty in a roll up your sleeves and get to work sort of way. The masculine blend starts out strong and musky and finishes with fresh green, fruity and citrus top notes. Nelly, on the other hand, remains a lady’s man. Apple Bottoms, like his clothing company, is named for his appreciation of round derrieres and is made for his kind of woman: “confident, strong, sexy and on trend.” The juice is sweet and sultry with hints of pink peony, rose and apple blossoms.Power by Fifty Cent will be available Nov. 5th at Macy’s. The entertainer is kicking off the launch with a 5-city tour. Catch him at the following Macy’s stores for a meet and greet.
