Chicago’s Rising Stars: Want to be “in”? Add these names to your speed dial

There’s no shortage of salons, boutiques and med spas in Chicago. However, if you prefer to set the trends, not follow them, here’s the talent you need to know about.

AJ Johnson, owner of AJ’s of Chicago (648 Randolph St.) If you want healthy, shiny hair, AJ is your man. This beauty industry vet got his big break styling supermodel Iman’s hair, and he’s been in the spotlight, very comfortably I might add, since. His salon specializes in African American hair and has been catering to a high-end clientele for 16 years. What to expect: When you enter AJ’s of Chicago, you’ll be greeted with welcoming smiles. Then you’ll quickly realize the Zen decor is not just attractive, it’s necessary. Even AJ admits it helps balance the outgoing personalities of his team. He handpicked his skilled staff and while some exhibit a diva-like behavior, they can get away with it because their work is that good. AJ and his team styled this photo shoot shot by the fabulous Maria Ponce, and the hair and makeup definitely impressed. Read More

Lise Watier Press Trip in Montreal — What To Buy & What I did

Day two started out with a lovely brunch at the Ritz with Madame Watier (shown above). I was impressed by Lise Watier, not only because she’s the founder of this successful 40-year-old company and is still involved in the product creation, but also because she’s on a mission to empower women and has taken this a step further by forming her own charity. As for the products, here’s what stood out to me… Read More

A Quick Fix When You Look Exhausted

When I’m on little-to-no sleep, putting on makeup is the last thing I’m in the mood to do. We’ve all been there. But, there are a few products in my stash that I can easily swipe on without paying attention, and they really make me look like I’m in a better state that I actually am. One such savior is Bobbi Brown Brightening Finishing Powder. It’s a pink, white, and lilac mosaic that brightens a tired, sallow complexion. I dab on a little concealer under my eyes and at the sides of my nose, and then give my face a generous dusting of the glowy powder. It’s not glittery like Bobbi’s Shimmer Bricks, so you can really just brush it on wherever without the fear of looking too shiny. It’s a trusty little pick-me-up for sluggish days. posted by Cody

My Trip to Montreal to Introduce Lise Watier Cosmetics to the US

Sometimes it’s fun to be the first of your friends to show up wearing the season’s hottest trend or most-wanted bag. Here’s an opportunity that will guarantee you’ll be the most fashion forward person in your group. Have you heard of Lise (pronounced “Leez”) Watier (sounds similar to Cartier) cosmetics? I hadn’t, and I’m pretty sure most Americans haven’t either. The Canadian-based beauty company invited me and eight other bloggers on what the industry calls a “press trip.” That means they fly us out, put us up in a hotel and host us during our stay. We arrived in their hometown of Montreal and quickly realized this brand is the Canadian’s equivalent of Estee Lauder! They’re major in Canada and are soon to be as big in the states now that they’ve just launched an e-commerce website in the US (lisewatier.us). Now you can be one of the first to get your hands on these beauty products. If you need help shopping, keep reading because I’ll be sharing my fave products this week. But first, here are highlights from my time in Montreal! DAY 1… Lise Watier gifted us these custom iPhone cases and beauty goodies upon our arrival. Read More
